Welcome to the final edition of the VIRTIGATION project newsletter!

As the VIRTIGATION project has successfully wrapped up 4,5 years of research into protecting tomato and cucurbits from emerging plant viruses, we provide you with a last update on our final activities, events and publications, including our final scientific symposium in Leuven, which took place on the 7th of November 2025.

Furthermore, we summarise our achieved project results in a final press release. We invite you to explore these final project materials featured in this edition, as we celebrate VIRTIGATION’s achievements, and thank you for having taken part in our mission to protect tomato and cucurbits from emerging plant viruses.

VIRTIGATION final scientific symposium

The VIRTIGATION final symposium took place on the 7th of November 2025 at the Irish College Leuven, Belgium. Gathering key plant health stakeholders, the final event highlighted our achieved results and provided an outlook on the future of horticultural plant protection in the EU. The project’s final symposium was preceded by the final annual meeting of VIRTIGATION partners, who outlined the preparations for the final report to the EU Commission. Moreover, discover our interviews conducted with symposium keynote speakers in the frame of the final event: hear about the latest plant health policy and scientific insights from Charlotte Trontin (EPPO secretariat), Marleen Botermans (NVWA – National plant protection organisation of the Netherlands), Adrian Fox (Fera Science) and Wulf Menzel (Leibniz Institute DSMZ).

Discover our project materials in Zenodo

 

Post-project, the VIRTIGATION Zenodo community on emerging viruses in tomato and cucurbits will still remain actively maintained to add any new publications and datasets released and generated by project partners. In addition to this, the VIRTIGATION website hosts all project materials by consortium members.
